The Sixth General Surgery Conference of the Yemeni Surgeons Association and the Fourth Conference of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ibb, in partnership with Al-Thawra General Hospital Authority, successfully concluded its activities with wide participation from specialized surgeons. The three-day conference featured 73 scientific papers.
The conference included discussion sessions that addressed the challenges faced by doctors in general surgery, oncology surgery, pediatric surgery, vascular surgery, and trauma surgery. Advanced techniques in upper gastrointestinal surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and cosmetic surgery were also highlighted, alongside advanced procedures such as hernia, liver and pancreas surgery, endocrine, and rectal surgeries.
Dr. Nasser Al-Hujaili, President of the University, expressed his happiness with the conference's great success, saying: "The convening of this distinguished scientific conference at the University of Ibb reflects our commitment to enhancing scientific research and developing medical education in Yemen. We are proud of the participation of elite doctors and surgeons who made important scientific contributions and helped exchange experiences and knowledge in vital areas such as general surgery, oncology, pediatric surgery, and other specialized fields."
Dr. Abdulghani Ghabsha, President of Al-Thawra General Hospital Authority, emphasized that Al-Thawra Hospital always supports such scientific events that contribute to increasing doctors' efficiency and improving healthcare services. He noted that the scientific papers presented, particularly in the fields of oncology surgery, trauma surgery, and vascular surgery, will have a positive impact on the medical care provided at the hospital. He added that he looks forward to implementing some of the recommendations from the conference to enhance the skills of medical staff and improve the quality of healthcare for patients.
Dr. Bashir Al-Umwi, Chair of the Conference Preparatory Committee, stated: "Organizing this conference was a great challenge, but thanks to the joint efforts of the preparatory committee and the participants, we were able to present a distinguished scientific event that combined experience and innovation in the field of surgery. With the participation of 600 doctors and the presentation of more than 73 scientific papers covering various fields of surgery, we created an ideal platform for exchanging ideas and experiences among doctors and surgeons." Dr. Qasim Al-Yahari, Vice President of the Conference’s Scientific Committee, added that the primary goal of this conference is to enhance continuous medical education and develop the skills of Yemeni surgeons by discussing the latest developments in surgical techniques. He also emphasized the search for practical solutions to the challenges facing surgery in Yemen, especially under the current circumstances.
Meanwhile, Dr. Abdullah Al-Hubaishi, one of the participants in the conference, said: "The conference was a great opportunity for us as doctors to learn about the latest surgical techniques and connect with our colleagues from various provinces. Discussing more than 74 scientific papers in different surgical specializations gave us new insights into how to tackle the daily challenges we face in operating rooms. I benefited from the sessions that covered vascular and laparoscopic surgery." Regarding her participation in the exhibition, Dr. Noha Abdu noted that it was not just an opportunity to learn but also to interact with colleagues and exchange experiences that will contribute to improving pediatric medical care in our country.
Among the key recommendations of the conference:
- Work on issuing a periodic journal for scientific research.
- Ensure adherence to the available guidelines for each medical condition.
- Highlight the importance of sub-specializations and encourage joining these specialized fields.
- Commitment to the task list set by the World Health Organization to avoid medical errors.
- Encourage new research that contributes to surgical academic development.
- Conduct training workshops on the skills that surgeons need.
The conference concluded with honoring the supporters and the preparatory committee. Everyone expressed their hope that these recommendations would improve the level of surgical healthcare in Yemen.
