COP29:The UAE launches an initiative to establish the Global Alliance for Energy Efficiency

The UAE announced, during its participation in the COP29 conference, the launch of the “Global Alliance for Energy Efficiency” initiative. This initiative aims to enhance global energy efficiency and double its annual improvement rate by 2030. It seeks to reduce carbon emissions and decrease natural resource consumption through collaboration between countries, institutions, and companies, in line with the commitment established by the historic “UAE Agreement” at COP28.

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), His Excellency Engineer Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, highlighted on the sidelines of the UAE Pavilion at COP29 in Azerbaijan that the initiative responds to a shared global desire to boost energy efficiency. He emphasized that the UAE will lead the alliance by providing best practices, sharing knowledge, and fostering public-private partnerships. He also invited governments, organizations, and leaders to join the coalition to unify efforts, stimulate investments in energy efficiency projects, and develop the necessary policies and technologies to achieve sustainability goals.

Al Olama added that the alliance seeks to promote knowledge exchange, build capacity, and strengthen public-private partnerships. It also standardizes criteria and encourages investment in financial and technological solutions. This is particularly important for developing regions like Africa, which require such initiatives to support their development efforts.

He noted that the ministry’s participation in the conference aims to build on the successes of COP28 and enhance international cooperation to implement the “UAE Agreement”. He also pointed to the ministry’s involvement in several ministerial sessions and its support for Azerbaijan's presidency in climate initiatives such as the “Energy Storage, Hydrogen, and Green Corridor Initiative.”

Al Olama concluded by stressing that the COP29 conference represents a vital opportunity to strengthen international partnerships in alignment with the outcomes of COP28, especially the tripling of renewable energy production and doubling energy efficiency.

It is worth noting that the “Global Alliance for Energy Efficiency” is an international initiative launched by the UAE to support global environmental goals by enhancing international cooperation and doubling the global annual energy efficiency rate by 2030.
